The Challenge
Even factories with the most streamlined operations produce waste and byproducts; an estimated 7.6 billion tons of factory waste are generated and disposed of nationwide every year. The good news is, much of this discarded waste (due to: overproduction, defective product, transportation or supply chain changes) is recyclable.
Before teaming with RoadRunner, this manufacturer was sending 100% of their waste to landfill and spending nearly $240,000 per year to do so. To be a more responsible and sustainable manufacturer, they knew they needed strategic guidance from recycling experts to develop a plan of action to divert their byproduct from landfills. That’s when they turned to RoadRunner for a modern, innovative approach to diversion and waste management.
RoadRunner’s Impact
After performing a complete waste analysis using proprietary technology, RoadRunner discovered a large majority of their waste stream was mostly polyethylene fabric, wood, and cardboard. The good news? That’s all recyclable material. RoadRunner implemented a new staging system that would organize recyclables by stream without disrupting day to day operations and set up a custom collection program to collect recyclables and divert them from landfills.
The Result? An increase from 0% to 88% diversion from landfill and cost savings from tailoring services of 16%, equating to over $38,000 annually. With this extraordinary improvement in diversion rates, this manufacturer could now confidently claim to be a sustainable supply chain partner and enabled their ability to have stronger ESG reports with science-based data.
